Nubank Rolls Out eSIM Service to Premium Users

Challenger bank Nubank of Brazil is partnering with Telecom-as-a-Service platform Gigs to provide a digital travel eSIM in its premium client package.

Clients of Nubank's Ultravioleta premium package may use their mobile banking app to activate the yearly 10GB eSIM, which will save them money on roaming fees and provide them with free high-speed data when they go overseas.

"The launch of travel eSIMs is a natural next step in Nubank's successful foray into the travel space, and presents a powerful lever to drive adoption of the Ultravioleta offering among Nubank's 100 million customers," said Hermann Frank, co-founder and CEO of Gigs. Combining necessities of life like insurance, banking, and now telecom into a single hub improves user experience but increases stickiness. It would be interesting to watch who follows Nu's lead in bringing banking and telecom together.

Actually, NuBank is only following in the footsteps of Revolut, which introduced an eSIM service in February to assist UK premium users in fending against skyrocketing data roaming costs when traveling. Western Union followed suit in March by launching a paid offering for users of its digital wallets in Germany, Italy, Poland, and Romania.

Higher credit limits, alluring prizes, cashback incentives, family accounts, insurance, unrestricted withdrawals, and round-the-clock customer support are among the other benefits offered to Nubank Ultravioleta members.

The agreement with Gigs comes after Rafael Plantier, a former employee of Stripe and Nubank, was appointed by the company in April of last year to lead financial services.
