Leading global payments solutions provider Checkout.com has forecast that online sales during Ramadan in the United Arab Emirates will continue to soar in a number of important retail and service categories. This indicates how the nation's digital payment ecosystem is growing in credibility and customer convenience.

Checkout.com anticipates that during this holy month, transactions in online marketplaces, clothing, healthcare, and travel will be among the high-growth categories, based on past purchasing trends.

Checkout.com's historical data indicates that, in comparison to the previous time, the number of digital payment transactions in the UAE during Ramadan increased by 8.5% for all product and service categories. Online marketplaces saw the biggest increase in consumer transactions last year, accounting for 143% of all transactions. During Ramadan, there were significant increases in transactions in the following categories: clothes (78%), healthcare (48%), travel agencies (42%), and sports and toys (31%).

In the UAE, remittances increased by 17% over the previous quarter, indicating a notable increase in the amount of money expatriates are sending to their friends and family in advance of the Eid holidays and throughout the holy month.

Overall, Checkout.com observed a 69% increase in the region's year-over-year processing volumes of online transactions during Ramadan in 2023. In 2022–2023, the volume increased by a staggering 143%.

Remo "We observe a growing confidence in digital payment platforms and increasing trust from consumers for online shopping," stated Giovanni Abbondandolo, General Manager - MENA at Checkout.com. This is a reflection of the distinct tastes associated with Ramadan buying as well as the dynamic and ever-changing digital payments environment in the United Arab Emirates. Online spending has increased significantly in recent years due to the nation's fast digitization, and payment service providers are adapting their value offerings to meet the changing needs of retailers.

Previous research conducted by Checkout.com suggests that the significant preference for online purchasing is more of a permanent behavioral shift than a transient one. Customers in the United Arab Emirates are becoming more and more driven by the unparalleled ease that e-commerce offers, together with the speed and security that reliable payment processors provide.
