In addition to cash, the Central Bank of Mauritania has tasked Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) with creating a digital version of the Ouguiya national currency.
G+D has been hired to provide the technological solution for the preliminary testing of specified use cases and to assist the central bank in creating the specifications for a national CBDC.
The governor of the Central Bank of Mauritania, Mohamed Lemine Ould Dhehby, says, "The Banque Centrale de Mauritanie has strategically positioned itself for the potential launch of a digital currency." "With the exploratory work we have now decided upon, we are broadening our expertise, experience, and skill set. G+D's proficiency in this cutting-edge, quickly evolving subject will enable us to realize it for the good of the entire nation."
Similar projects are part of G+D's CBDC work in Ghana and Eswatini.
G+D was chosen by Banco do Brasil in March to test offline payments as a part of the digital currency Drex's pilot program for central banking. This came after a similar project on the e-HKD CBDC pilot program was carried out in Hong Kong.
