World-renowned biometrics company Fingerprint Cards AB (FingerprintsTM) and worldwide card maker Tag Systems have teamed with Money Carer, a UK-based national social enterprise dedicated to delivering secure money management services for vulnerable individuals.
The businesses have developed and introduced a "carer card" with biometric capabilities, removing obstacles that have historically prevented vulnerable individuals in the UK from obtaining financial services.
2010 saw the creation and introduction of the first "carer card" by Money Carer, a safe and secure shopping card option that lets caregivers buy things for the people they look after. Since then, the card system has changed to include spending constraints, free ATM withdrawals, sweep systems, and balance limits. In addition to being used by numerous local governments and legal businesses that are in charge of overseeing the finances of their own vulnerable clients, the Money Carer Card currently assists thousands of individual carers as well as hundreds of care providers throughout the United Kingdom.
Before Fingerprints' technology was included, the Money Carer Card's authentication method was the PIN. To make a payment, vulnerable cardholders and their caregivers are no longer required to recall and input a PIN. To pay at the point of sale, they just place the thumb or finger of their choice on the sensor and tap. This improves security while also streamlining the checkout process.
"At Money Carer, we are absolutely committed to promoting inclusivity and autonomy," says Sean Tyrer, CEO of the company. Many of our clients find that the PIN on a credit card is a barrier that prevents financial inclusion, particularly those who have memory or vision problems. Our clients will never have to remember or enter a PIN again thanks to biometrics, which will open up hitherto unattainable doors to financial sovereignty.
The second-generation T-Shape® (T2) sensor module, software platform, and algorithm from Fingerprints are incorporated into Tag Systems' next-generation carer cards. With Tag's exclusive Biometric Card as a Service (BCaaS) solution, Money Carer can easily issue the next generation cards, including payment processing. The Money Carer website and app will soon offer the cards for purchase. Five biometric-enabled cards can be issued for each Money Carer account.
"Our primary objective at Fingerprints has always been to make strong authentication simple," says CEO Adam Philpott. Being a member of a project that directly addresses the obstacles that have historically prevented vulnerable individuals from obtaining financial services makes us quite pleased. This is the ideal illustration of how technology can promote diversity.
