To counteract fraudulent bank impersonation attempts, Westpac and telecom Optus have collaborated to provide a new certified in-app calling feature.
With Westpac SafeCall, users will be able to accept calls through the app that are confirmed by Optus, bear the Westpac logo, and have a caller ID. With the number of bank impersonation scam calls on the rise, the technology aims to provide clients with greater assurance regarding the legality of the call.
"We're continuing to invest in scam prevention and detection measures and are currently detecting 69 per cent of all scam cases," said Peter King, chief executive officer of Westpac. Westpac SafeCall will make Australia an even more difficult target for scammers and assist us in reducing bank impersonation scams.
The cloud communication division of Ericsson, Vonage, powers the branded calling offering.
Customers of Westpac will progressively be able to use SafeCall in the upcoming months.
A similar in-app'status call' tool, introduced by UK neobank Monzo last year, assists users in determining if a call is coming from a legitimate bank employee or a scammer conducting an impersonation scam.
