With the recent release of its Atlas upgrade, leading Ethereum (ETH) layer-2 solution Arbitrum (ARB) has taken a significant step in reducing transaction fees and increasing network efficiency.
The Atlas update for Arbitrum is now available.
The main company behind Arbitrum, Offchain Labs, has declared that the ArbOS 20 update, known as "Atlas," has been successfully activated on the Arbitrum network.
In order to simplify data processing at a lower cost, the Atlas upgrade, which is a part of the ArbOS 20 release, incorporates Ethereum's Dencun support and introduces blob transactions. As of March 18th, Arbitrum intends to further reduce execution transaction fees in light of the recent rollout of the Atlas update.
The primary goal of the Atlas upgrade is to lower layer-1 (L1) posting fees through EIP-4844. Additional charge reductions are planned for the following week. According to Arbitrum, Atlas wants to cut the layer-2 (L2) base charge from 0.1 gwei to 0.01 gwei and the L1 excess fee per compressed byte from 32 gwei to zero. As such, apps running on Arbitrum One ought to benefit from the new pricing model without needing to be adjusted.
Off Chain Labs claims that Layer 3 Rollup chains built on top of Arbitrum One will automatically pay lower fees.
To reap similar benefits, autonomous Orbit L2 rollup chains are urged to adopt ArbOS Atlas and enable blob publishing.
Offchain Labs further emphasizes that suppliers of Arbitrum RaaS (Rollups-as-a-Service) such as Altlayer, Caldera, Conduit, and Gelato have pledged to upgrade current Orbit chains in order to facilitate the Ethereum Dencun upgrade as well as the Atlas upgrade.
Furthermore, by adding support for EIP-6780, the Atlas upgrade aligns Arbitrum (ARB) with EVM's security requirements. This opens the door for more EVM advancements in the future.
Offchain Labs noted that the Atlas upgrade will enable use cases that were previously unfeasible, such as gaming, SocialFi, and DeFi exchanges, by optimizing transaction costs.
It is anticipated that the recent deployment of Ethereum's Dencun upgrade—which lowers gas rates on L2 blockchains—will encourage broader adoption of the Ethereum ecosystem. It's crucial to remember that project teams must update their architecture to comply with the new standard before they can receive the instant pricing reductions.
The forthcoming "unlocking" event of Arbitrum
Over Arbitrum's development, a number of enhancements have significantly shaped its functionality and performance. Prior to the most recent Atlas upgrade, the blockchain project achieved major milestones with the network's major improvements.
Released in August 2022, the Arbitrum Nitro upgrade was a significant advancement that addressed scalability issues in the Ethereum ecosystem by increasing network speed and capacity. The goal of this upgrade was to increase transaction speed and efficiency while providing a strong base for a Layer 2 solution that would be more resilient and scalable.
In other events, the Arbitrum DAO decided to back out of a plan to donate around $1.28 million worth of ARB tokens to help Tornado Cash inventors Roman Storm and Alexey Pertsev with their legal bills. This decision was made in response to token holders' worries about possible legal ramifications for these gifts.
This plan called for the gift of ARB tokens valued at about $1.28 million in order to bolster legal action against the developers of Tornado Cash.
However, the idea was withdrawn because token holders expressed worries about possible legal dangers related to this donation.
The collaborative character of the cryptocurrency ecosystem is shown by the readiness of the Arbitrum community to step up and provide financial help for legal concerns. This also emphasizes the significance of legal clarity and responsibility within the sector.
