Nationwide Bank is testing a new program whereby, in regions where it is the last bank in town, the firm would donate £200 up to a maximum of £10,000 to a community fund for each new account created by locals.

The program, which was first introduced in Windsor, aims to donate up to £10,000 to a local charitable organization that will be chosen by the community.

According to the building society, it is also investigating how it will maintain its remaining branch sites, which number about 90 nationwide.

Nationwide was the final remaining branch in Windsor following the closures of Barclays and HSBC earlier this year.

Using online surveys and voting boxes located in the Nationwide branch, locals will select how the fund is allocated during the trial period.

As a member-owned mutual, Nationwide is able to make decisions that serve the interests of its customers rather than those of its shareholders, according to Mandy Beech, director of retail services. We are aware that having a physical branch gives many people a sense of community, belonging, and having a supportive group of people in addition to being able to access financial services. We have pledged to keep branches operating because we still think they are crucial.
