Pilot tests of Banco do Brasil's central banking digital currency, Drex, will involve testing offline payments in collaboration with the French firm Giesecke+Devrient (G+D).

The studies will investigate use cases for the Brazilian digital currency in payment scenarios without a power grid or internet access.

Additionally, it will make it possible to make payments in emergency scenarios when cash was previously the sole option, including power or internet outages.

By offering an alternative payment method to cash, one of the project's primary objectives is to increase Brazilians' access to financial services who have little or no Internet connection.

Cash payment is the most popular payment method in social groups D and E, but it is the second most popular payment method nationwide, trailing only the instant payment option PIX.

By the end of 2024, the Central Bank of Brazil intends to introduce the CBDC Drex.

Important elements like "offline capability" and "interoperability" have already been evaluated by G+D in earlier pilot projects, such as the offline CBDC testing phase of Hong Kong's e-HKD. This entails making sure that transactions run smoothly and securely in every situation and letting customers use their preferred network and digital wallet.

The goal of BB, according to Marisa Reghini, vice-president of digital business and technology, is to make financial services more accessible to all Brazilians.

Explaining the significance of offline payment, she emphasizes its ability to provide ease and technology to individuals facing challenges in accessing technological infrastructure. Brazilians can derive benefits from this solution in their day-to-day activities, enabling secure transactions in local shops without the necessity of a bank account or internet connection
