BBVA establishes a unit to fund innovation in cleantech.

The need of new clean technology in helping to decarbonize the economy was emphasized by Carlos Torres Vila. The BBVA Chair highlighted the potential for exponential development in innovation in the green industrial revolution during a discussion with Lei Zhang, CEO of Envision.

One of the biggest new energy technology groups in the world is called Envision. It plans to construct a gigafactory for batteries in Cáceres, in western Spain. The company works on innovative green technology projects globally.

"At BBVA, we believe in innovation as a driver to achieve decarbonization," said Carlos Torres Vila. He specifically emphasized the importance of innovation in creating more reasonably priced renewable technology. In this regard, the Chair of the BBVA emphasized the significance of "being a tech company" to maintain competitiveness in the sustainability space.

Speaking at the start of the third BBVA Sustainability Forum, BBVA CEO Onur Genç emphasized the importance of banks in helping to finance the decarbonization of the economy. He believes that banks serve as the driving forces behind the orderly shift that benefits both their customers and society at large. In order to promote the development of clean technology for decarbonization, particularly in its early phases, he also backed bold changes and appropriate incentives.

Joining Ignacio Sánchez Galán, chairman of Iberdrola; Patricia Espinosa, former executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and CEO of climate funds and hydrogen funds; Julia Reinaud, head of Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy fund in Europe; expert Juan Verde, advisor to the Biden administration on environmental issues; and other global leaders and notable figures in sustainability, were among those attending the 3rd BBVA Sustainability Forum.

Participants on behalf of BBVA also included Peio Belausteguigoitia, CEO of BBVA in Spain, Javier Rodríguez Soler, Global Head of Sustainability and CIB; Antonio Bravo, Global Head of Sustainability & CIB Strategy; and Antoni Ballabriga, Global Head Sustainability Intelligence & Advocacy.

The round tables covered important topics such the corporate and global sustainability concerns, the U.S. position on the climate agenda, and the potential of innovation for decarbonization. Prominent sustainability initiatives from Spanish and foreign businesses and organizations were shown.

The bank's headquarters in Madrid, Ciudad BBVA, hosted its inaugural event, which was certified sustainable by Eventsost. This accreditation is a testament to the bank's efforts to ensure that the 3rd BBVA Sustainability Forum is an environmentally conscious event.
