In the US, Amazon is getting rid of its "Just Walk Out" cashierless technology from its Fresh grocery stores.
The Just Walk Out system was introduced in 2018 and uses cameras, sensors, and artificial intelligence (AI) to track the things that customers remove off the shelves. It then charges itself automatically via an app.
However, Tony Hoggett, Amazon's SVP of grocery shops, claims that the technology is being taken out of Fresh locations as part of a makeover in an interview with The Information.
Rather, the business will make use of intelligent shopping carts that enable users to scan products as they go and process payments automatically.
Amazon Go locations will continue to use the Just Walk Out technology, and other retailers will still be granted licenses to use it.
