Jack Dorsey Steps Down from Bluesky Board

The most well-known investor in Bluesky has departed the board.

Jack Dorsey wrote on X on Saturday on awards for open protocols from his charitable Start Small program. Dorsey gave a curt "no" in response when someone asked him if he was still on the Bluesky board. All of the follow-up posts urging Dorsey to provide an explanation for his leaving went unanswered.

Since Dorsey was still listed as a board member in Bluesky's corporate FAQ as of Sunday morning, it's unclear when exactly he quit the board. Later in that afternoon, the business released the following news:

We truly appreciate Jack's assistance in starting and providing financing for the Bluesky project. Now, Bluesky is a flourishing open-source social network powered by our decentralized technology atproto.

We are looking for a new board member for the Bluesky public benefit corporation who is equally committed to creating a social network that allows users to take charge of their experience in light of Jack's resignation. More is on the way!

When Dorsey was still the CEO of Twitter in 2019, he made the initial announcement about Bluesky. "Financing a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media," he said, referring to Twitter (now X).

Following that, Bluesky transformed into a stand-alone public benefit company under the direction of CEO Jay Graber, supported by venture capital, and it opened to the public in February.

Although just a few social media posts at the time recognized his departure, Dorsey seemed to have deactivated his Bluesky account at some point last year. (He deactivated his Instagram account as well.) He continued to be the most well-known figure connected to the project in spite of this.

Coming back to X, Dorsey had a busy weekend. Apart from sharing business-related updates, he has also commented on the rivalry between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, unfollowed almost all accounts, and sent a message saying, "Don't rely on corporations to grant you rights." You are on one, therefore use freedom technology to protect them yourself.
